Live

Played 3 sessions live during the last graph also. Up €2200 or so so it isnt as bad as it looks! Could have been way more as well. Got the nut straight in vs a set on the turn for a 600 pot and a gutshot SFD with the NF in against a huge tards straight in a 1200 pot. His range was way way way wider than that as well so it was a pretty gay hand for him to turn over. Played really well though and only made 1 or 2 smallish mistakes. Included getting calling a shove with Q high bad draw against Alan Shakespeare and staying good. Also made a few other pretty sickish calls I was happy with. Ran a few big bluffs to keep my image good but it was mainly just value betting the stations cos they are so so so so bad.

Lesson: Should play live more often obv.

Last Two and A bit Months graphed, and IPO

Says it all really. Playing good running baddish. Its about half and half 100NL and 200NL, with most of the difference between Sklansky bucks and showdown winnings being at 200NL unfortunately.

I've also played fuck all hands in over two months. Can't improve on that at the moment with college though.

On the positive side I've been playing well. I feel like I'm reading hands so so so much better than I did before. I've also got my without showdown winnings positive for the first time in my life. I'm not playing any laggier just putting more pressure on people. If I had ran to EV it would have been a sick couple of months!

Anyways jut checking in briefly! Gotta do some study!

EDIT: Oh yeah busto'd from the IPO late day one. Got to 16000 at 100/200 from a 10k starting stack mostly without SD and the rest from a rivered flush in a smallish pot. Then I decided to 4bet bluff Shoutman/Luke from Boards and continue to fire after he calls the 4bet oop with A3cc on an A high board. Sigh. Down to 5k.

Build it back up gradually, maintaining a 10BB stack from 200/400 all the way up to 500/1000 where I briefly double up with KK vs QQ and then back to 10BB 2 hands later with KQ < AK. I stack up lots in the next hour and a half till I have 40k at 1000/2000, mostly due to 44 > AK, and the rest w/o SD. Then I play a few hands like a spaz and find myself left shoving 79o for 13k on the button into a Frenchies AA. Busto. Sigh.

Running like Alastair Cragg

That is to say I suck, I run bad, maybe I ran well once, but I definitely amn't now. I beat up on the really bad guys but when I come up against real competition I falter and fail. Ugh wish I had a good FAIL pic for my self-esteem. I'm down 10 buyins, or $2078 in the last 10k hands. Bankroll down to circa 7k. Withdrew $1000 dollars after the last post as well, and was up $500 or so in the next couple k hands. Have $600 or so RB due as well so its not all bad.

Been really spewy the last while. Still playing aroung 24/20 but trying to increase my dollars won without showdown. I always feel I play a bit weaktight, and am definitely down in non-SD pots, so thought I'd concentrate on that for a while. Its working lol but the SD pots ain't so good! Thats natural I suppose though for the change I made, and the fact that I implemented a change at all means a downswing is not unexpected.

Hasn't all been spew though. I've repeatedly run the bottom of my range into the top of villain's, ran bad in terms other than EV, get beats etc etc. Some 60/20 fish ran really hot against me for 3 buyins as well. Sigh.

On the plus side I now have HEM up and running. It is awesomely good. Dunno how I survived without it. Also glad to see that all my stats that were previously unavailable to me are in line with what I would have expected them to be like.

Played live a little bit the last while. Played for bout an hour in Naas a while ago, lost a buyin. Lost a few small pots in really standard situations vs shorties and got TPTK in vs Dennis Reyes's OESD on the turn. He spikes obv. Not as good as it sounds though cos that was the very bottom of his range. My call was actually really close to neutral EV vs his range even when I was getting like 3/1 on the call. That's always a bad sign! Went to the fitz last night for a couple hours as well. Got in early and left early cos I need to get to college these days! Spun €200 up to €1095 for a good session.

Most of the profit was courtesy of the dealer though! Got in a pot vs a huge donk 200BB deep vs a huge donk. I pot it preflop to 11 with AhQh from UTG+4, 4 callers obv. Flop is Q63. 2 checks, I bet 35, donk calls, 2 folds. Turn 2, I bet 80, he raises to 160, I shove, he has 62o. Rivers a 3 to pair the board and give me an 850 pot! Thank you Matt!

Stack him again about 10 hands later after he rebuys, when he tries to 3bet my UTG raise with JJ but doesn't put out enough. End up getting it in with a set vs his QQ which had a OESD on a K high turn.

Few more small hands get me up to 1200, lose 3/4 of a buyin to a gutter, 1/4 buyin when AK < AQ and then win a smallish pot on my last hand to finish up with €1095 for a profit of €895. Only starts to make up for the previous couple of weeks though!

Standard of live is ridiculously bad. Most people who play online find it soul-destroying, but I actually don't mind it. If there is someone there you can talk to its actually OK and there usually is. I'm not a fan of the ipod though cos it makes you look like a prat in most people who play live's eyes. That in itself is -EV. Dunno who said it originally, but I know Kayroo repeatedly says that a happy table is a +EV table. True that. It also makes it easier to bear a couple of hours at the table if people are having fun. That being said I'm not much of a talker at the table but I try not to be a surly cunt all the same! I'm opening a lot more pots these days than when I used to as I am more comfortable playing so just want to create as many opportunities as possible to play pots against the tards.

Whenever I think of a way of trying to explain how bad live is, I always remember one hand. In the fitz over the summer, dropped in for a few hours. Been at this table for about two hours. One hugely bad guy that I keep 3betting and isoraising with position. Table still thinks I'm a nit. I've probably raised more hands than any of the others though. One guy, who we'll call TARD gets pissed off at me cos I ran hot for about 20 hands, which is about the space of an hour. I show up with the goods for like half of these and run up a big stack. TARD says to me "Every time you reraise I just know you have either AA or KK!" Table agrees calling me a rock. So you would assume they would fold a few more hands to my raises???? Obv not. Their live tards. Very next hand UTG raises to 7 7 handed, 3 callers, I repop to 35 from the SB, (with AA!), everybody calls! I was trying so hard not to laugh particularly after what that guy said literally two minutes beforehand! Flop is AKT (BINGO!), I bet out 1 fold, TARD instashoves, 1 fold, I obv snap. TARD has K9. TARD says "I knew you had it but I was getting value." WP sir.

On that optimistic note for the future of poker I'll leave yis to it! Got to do a project and bullshit about website design. Now that is the real beat.

Running Good

Haven't been updating this much in the last while. Got out of that 20bi hole at 0.50/1 and spun up a few more dollars since the last post. I'm now playing 1/2 and doing OK. Bankroll is in or around $9000.

Not going to be playing much for the next 4 months or so cos I've a pretty serious time in college coming up. Its my 3rd year but its gonna be really tough. Gotta get the head down and study. I'll play a little bit but not much! Never was much of a person for grinding anyways!

I've loosened up a little bit since the last time I posted. I'm now playing in or around 24/20 and am making a few dollars in non SD pots. I used to be B/E in them but I'm now a good winner in them I think. I've ramped up the aggression considerably. That being said I still play the odd session like an absolute bitch but meh. Regs at 1/2 are considerably better than at 0.50/1 but imo its still easily beatable.

Gotta give it a shot anyways!

I'll try keep this posting lark up!

Getting Out Of it FTW

13 bi out of the 20 bi downswing now! Playing well, but I was playing well during the downswing too imo. Not as many coolers and beats though which make the difference! Not running above EV either though so its not like I'm running like god!

Article

http://www.royalflushclubmembers.com/public/390.cfm

Mentioned I did this a while ago. Odd circumstances really. They spammed my email inbox with 2 months ago's version of this newsletter. I read it and one of the articles stood out as sucking a lot imo. I mailed them back saying that if they wanted to spam my inbox at least they should send something that is good advice (in retrospect its not a terrible article, and it is well enough written, I just happen to disagree pretty massively with the argument proposed). The manager/owner of the company got back to me asking me why I thought it was bad advice. I said why and in the following emails I wormed a way into writing this!

Really dunno why I did something on this though cos I really suck at tournaments! I can quote you theory all day but that doesn't stop me sucking! Looking back I should have reedited the article at least once more too cos I'm not a massive fan of how its written but sigh.... Said I'd post it anyway.

Not playing much poker at the moment, too busy with work. Works going pretty well though so I'm happy! Only poker I've played is the Boards HU league. Through to the quarter finals now. Have beaten Lao Lao, GillCarr, WHBonney, and Aegilops thus far. All pretty tough games but they all had a vastly different style. All put me through my paces in different ways. I've been lucky to get this far really cos theres so much variance in HU.

They all play pretty good imo. GillCarr was probably the toughest imo. Very tough opponent. Very good with gameflow and doesn't give an inch. From what I have seen of her play I can't believe she hasn't won something big tbh. That being said they all gave me a few headaches. Some of WHBonneys lines wrecked my head so hard. My bro could attest to that as he heard me giving out from the next room about wtf was going on in so many spots! Confused the hell out of me! Ended up making a Q high call against him in a weird hand that I will post sometime in the future as I think theres a few different levels there and I'm not sure if I was thinking correctly. Can't remember the games vs LaoLao much cos they were the longest ago but I know he play good. I think he ran pretty badly in those games, as in he ran the bottom of some of his ranges into the middle/top of mine repeatedly. As such I didn't get a really accurate reflection of his game, but I know remembering thinking that he plays good. Aegilops plays quite an unorthodox style so I made a load of adjustments to my game, dunno if they were logical or not. It was always inevitable from the game flow that I was ultimately going to get my chips in bad, but the question was who was going to adjust better to a kinda weird gameflow. The question is obviously unanswerable as we only had 3 games, and I got lucky to take it down.

Dunno who I'll have for my next game, but its gonna be tough no matter who it is. I have serious respect for everyone left, and I'm just happy to get this far. Obviously I'd like to go further but I would not be disappointed.

tl;dr again but its more a stream of consciousness. I don't really write with the aim of it being readable unfortunately! I write more for utility, so I dunno whether I should make this more readable or just use this as an outlet to help with moderating myself...

I'll have to think about that one!

SICKNESS

Poker is so fucking sick.

17 bi downswings FTL. I really don't feel like writing anything or posting any hands. I might if I start to get out of it. I'll post a graph sometime soon. Should be fucking hilarious.

Its times like this where I question whether its really worth it. Why the fuck do I bother doing something thats pissing me off and costing me money. I really don't know....

Its just not fun anymore. I see these guys that I used to think were really shitty moving up levels or crushing this one or just raking in the dollars, and here I am stagnating.

This is the third time I've hit 50 buyins at 100NL, from grinding it up from like $400 dollars over a lot of time and hands. Each time I've just killed my roll. Once from life rake and twice from downswings. Have I a fucking mental block for getting to 200NL or something?

I'm just sitting on my bed, two tables open. Just got KK in vs JJ on a Q high flop for 250BB. Obv he runner runners. Make that 18bi. I'm just sitting here pretty down, wondering about shit. Is what I'm doing pointless? Was I just running hot for a while like am I just a marginal loser. It just feels like shit. I dunno whether I'm taking beat after cooler or what the fuck I'm doing.

2nd Nut straight, FD < TP and a gutshot and KK < QJ Q high board with a gutshot while I was typing the last paragraph. This is a doozie of a session. Just standard though. It's actually a good session. I'm only down 3bi. GRRRRRR!!!!

All this other shit is going on as well at home and I'm so fucking tired. Sigh.

I'm really starting to question whether I can beat this level now. Are those fucking TAGfish really that much better than me? Obviously they are.

I'm not gonna post on boards or 2p2 with serious content till I get my head sorted, cos I've no doubt that that has something to do with the swong.

I'll probably delete this post later but whatever.

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Started a new job today as a trainee actuary. Turns out I won't be playing as much as I had planned cos I'm gonna have a hell of a lot of work to do! Just trying to grind out a few hands atm. Still playing well and starting to make inroads into that downswong.... More details to follow. Probably!

Lovely Stuff

So fucking steamed at the moment. Running pretty gay again.

Played pretty well midweek, making another circa $950. Blew $750 of that over the weekend through absolute sickness.

I'll start with the tourneys. Played 4, buyins totalling $90. QQ< KJ, KK< AQ, A8< KJ and KK< AQ again. All at the business end for stacks in the top 5% of the field, with one of them for the chip lead. Sigh. Cash none of them, close enough to the bubble in all of them, 10 off the bubble in one. Sigh.

Cash, coolers everywhere and beats. I don't feel like posting them in the slightest. Got 2 outered twice. FD's hit everywhere, one gutshot, then the random assortment of coolers. Funny thing is I actually feel like I'm playing very well. That's the really sick thing. Sigh though. Major sigh. So sick that I make my money when the tables are tough, and then lose it when its seriously fishy. So fucking annoying.

My teeth are acting up again too. Still on the painkillers from when my wisdom teeth were removed 9 days ago. Its starting to really piss me off. Even worse is that I'm starting a job tomorrow so I wont be able to take painkillers cos they make me really dozy. So i'll just have to put up with the pain. Lovely. Pulled out some of my stitches last night by accident too. And its a shitty minwage job too. Sigh.

So all in all its been a great weekend!

First half of June

So its been a pretty eventful two days! I've only had 6 days since I came back from holidays, but I've managed to stick in 14k hands which I'm pretty happy with. I did manage to run like constipation for most of it though, but for like the last 600 hands I ran like god. I'm still like 6 buy ins below EV for the 14k hands so I'm delighted to be coming out up a grand or so. I've been playing pretty weak is my only problem. I really have to not let myself get pushed around as much... let that be goal number 1!

Ended up getting into a massive hole monday morning through a few horrific ones. This one in particular stung a little. Don't think I played it hugely well but it still hurts! Really dunno why I just didn't shove it preflop but meh.

0.50/1

Button ($343.25)
SB ($216.00)
BB ($94.90)
Villain ($100.00)
TommyGunne ($141.60)
CO ($100.00)

Dealt to TommyGunne: Ah Ad

Preflop: Villain raises to 4.00, TommyGunne raises to 13.00, 4 folds, Villain raises to 34.00, TommyGunne calls 21.00.

Flop (73.50) 3s 4c 8d
Villain checks, TommyGunne checks.

Turn (73.50) 9h
Villain moves all-in for 66.00, TommyGunne calls 66.00.

River (205.50) Qc

UTG shows QsQh and wins 205.50 with Three of a kind, Queens

There were plenty more along with that one. You can see the dip in the graph, and it was pretty much all below EV. Another interesting one where I semibluffed the turn 140BB deep I posted on boards here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=56283564#post56283564

In general played well though, and am disappointed to be only up 1k. Have another circa $500 unmentionable as well so its not too bad. If I continue to play this good without running so bad the second half of this month will be sweet! Looking forward to it!

Exams

Just got my exam results there. I had 8 exams including two repeats and I passed them all so I'm ridiculously happy! I've worked so hard for this for the last few months, barely drinking, not playing poker, barely socialising etc etc and being locked away for a few months. I'm so happy its payed off. I deserved the hell I put myself through though cos I did sfa for the first semster, hence the two repeats. I even managed to get 4 A's, and I'm sure the two repeats would have also been A's if they released the grade. The other two were a C and a D- in Actuarial Maths and Statistical Inference. Quite happy with the C, its a pretty good grade for the module, and again I'm happy with the D- cos I hate that course. Girlfriend passed all hers too so everything seems great at the moment!

In poker news I made 10bi between yesterday and the day before. Playing pretty sick considering I'm below EV again. Made a further 3bi in RB. Its a function of not really being able to leave my room due to being on a massive amount of painkillers post-wisdom teeth operation

Friday, June 13, 2008

If this post doesn't make much sense there is a good explanation....

First of all, I'm just back from an insane holiday. Germany is the coolest place I have ever been to. 9 of us headed over to Eindhoven, but 4 of them including the girlfriend weren't able to hack it, so had to head back after a few days! 5 of us headed on down through Dusseldorf, Koblenz, Rock Am Ring and Franfurt. Craziest sessions I've had in a looooong time! Its gonna take a long time to recover imo! Rock Am Ring was absolutely amazing. Its so incredibly better than any festival run in Ireland. So much more organised, better weather, better acts, nicer people, and just in general a much much superior set up than here. The main reason I went is Rage Against The Machine though. I'm a monstrous fan, and here was the first gig that they announced in Europe, so my mates and I just hit that right away! Well worth it too. They were fcuking awesome. Prodigy, Serj Tankian, Incubus, Offspring, QOTSA, Metallica, Justice, Hot Chip, and a few other rando bands were awesome too. Best festival I've ever been at. Night time was pretty insane too. German's are absolutely mentallers! Fitted right in lol! The only downside is my body is absolutely wrecked up now after like 11 days of going mad so I gotta take it easy....

The other reason for possible lack of sense in this is that I am heavily drugged up at the moment lol! Just after getting my wisdom teeth out and I'm still pretty numb. There's actually blood dripping down my cheek atm. Lovely. I feel like a vegetable with no drool control. Except instead of drool I've blood and drool. Mmmmmmm. Thats really cute right? I've got a massive stock of painkillers now for the next few weeks so I'm gonna be a bit woozy. Only allowed eat ice cream for the next day or two so its not all bad!

Anaesthetics are really weird. Went all giggly for ages and I'm just so chilled now. Better not play poker for a while! Anyways over and out.... Gotta clean my face, its getting a bit messy....

Good Day

Just finished up a short session. Think I got about 1.5k hands in today or so....

Started off really badly, with Flush<2pair twice, and some other random cooler, but I clawed it back gradually to finish up circa 350 for the day, so I'm dead happy. The 2 house outdraws on my flushes were paid back with a couple of flushes hitting at the right times for me in big pots so karma wins!

Got a lot of work done in the garden at home, which really needs to be done considering I'm going on holidays on monday. Speaking of which roll on Rock Am Ring!

Anyways I'm wrecked tired and have a long day tomorrow so gl.

May 28th Update

So this is my first two weeks of the summer....

iPoker 50NL and 100NL 6max. I play 6 tables usually, FWIW, but I am comfortable with anything between 4 and 6.

Gone well. Started at 50NL and ground it up. Around about hand 10k I started integrating 100NL tables into my play and now i'm playing solely 100NL. I had an extended period of running below EV, round about my breakeven stretch, which was very very annoying. Running like the sun the last few 1000 hands though so its all good!

I feel really really in the zone since exams finished. Even during the breakeven stretch I was pwning. The games just seem really sickly soft at the moment. I'm running over the regs and the fish are plentiful, so all is good in the world!

My biggest leak atm is that I feel I am not aggressive enough. I know that seems contrary to my statement of "I'm running over the regs," but its true. I take really expoitable lines every now and again, and I auto fold hands sometimes that I really should think of turning into bluffs.... Luckily I have come across no good regs as of yet!

I'm generally happy with the rest of my game and feel no great need to change atm. I am confident my game could beat 200NL, so will be just trying to plug leaks for the time being. Hopefully....

Summary stats:
VPIP:23
PFR:19
W$WSF: 43
wtSD: 28
W$SD: 54
AF: 3.3

50NL: 9BB/100 over 11000 for $1028
100NL: 14.5BB/100 over 3000 for $883

Rakeback and bonii: $360

Random Omaha and Tourneys: $90

Total Profit: $2360

Bankroll: $3350 (After Life Rake)

Good couple of weeks so I'm delighted! Hopefully this keeps going! Good luck and I appreciate all comments!

Edit: Just did my sums on yesterday. Up $891 including RB. Pretty sweet for my first proper day at 100NL, considering I was still playing some 50NL this morning!!!!

Introduction!

Student type, thinks he's smart, likes the gamble....

You know the picture. You've seen hundreds of my type around if you have any familiarity with poker!

Basically I'm a UCD student, doing Actuarial, that thinks he can play poker.

As with most people, I started off at home. My bro would play a decent amount and would be quite good, so it was natural that he would teach me a little. He'd make me sit down and play him HU pretty often for a regular confidence boost to assure him he really didn't suck lol. I learnt a hell of a lot from these infrequent and generally short games, so that by the stage I moved onto pub tourneys I was pwning. I cashed 3 of my first 4 tourneys, with 2 wins, and that was the end of that!

I've progressed from these €25 donkfests to slightly better donkaments. When I moved to college, I found casinos, and would head on every couple of weeks for a small tourney. Gradually ground a roll up. Got a good score one day, sat into the live cash game with €100 flopped quads the first hand I played, and obv after that I played much more cash!

Since that I've obv had major swongs, being life busto a couple of times (due to the bitch that is life rake!), and generally ground up a roll from a small amount again. This time hopefully I can keep my roll without having to withdraw for life expenses, so here goes tha pokah bloggage to keep track of it, and hopefully help me keep focus!
